To T.S. Eliot, the German fighter planes bombing London were a holy spirit, unleashing the Pentecostal fire needed for salvation. But to Virginia Woolf the battle in the sky above her roof signified the “Hitlerism in the hearts of men.” How did other writers bear witness to these events? From the invasion of China to the atomic bombs dropped on Japan, from Dunkirk to D-Day, from the first “euthanasia” of a disabled child to the extermination of European Jews, we experience the war through the poetry and prose of authors who lived it, in different parts of the world, such as W.H. Auden, Wyslawa Szymborska, Langston Hughes, Ma Ning, Roald Dahl, e.e. cummings, Marc Bloch and Primo Levi. We hear the memoirs of prisoners and resistance fighters, such as Simone Veil and Claude Cahun — and lighten the gloom with the popular songs that kept people’s spirits up in the darkest hours….
