SUMMARY:The Lion and the Jewel by Wole Soyinka - 7 May
DESCRIPTION:The Lion and the Jewel is a light comedy by Nigerian playwright Wole Soyinka. First performed in 1959\, it is considered one of the most important works in Soyinka’s oeuvre. \nThe play depicts the conflict between traditional values and modernity\, as embodied by the two main characters: Lakunle\, a young man who embraces Western culture\, and Sidi\, a woman who represents the traditional values of her community. The play was written during a time of great change in Nigeria\, as the country was transitioning from colonialism to independence. It is considered a classic work of Nigerian literature and has been translated into many languages\, and staged all across the world\, including at the Royal Court Theatre in 1966.  It also serves as prescribed literature text for the West African School Certificate Examination. \nThis play illustrates the challenges faced in traditional African settings to embrace modernization.  The topics addressed in this play: polygamy\, seduction and the “battle of the sexes”\, etc. are brought out in this short play\, thanks to the literary genius of Wole Soyinka. \nMain characters \nBaroka– The Balè or chieftain of Ilujinle\, a Yoruba village in the realm of the Ibadan clan’s kingdom. A crafty individual\, he is the Lion referred to in the title. At 62 years of age\, he has already sired 63 children thanks to polygamy. And still wants to woo Sidi\, the jewel; \nLakunle– The progressive and absurdly arrogant Westernised teacher. He is in his twenties. He appears to only be semi-literate; \nSidi– A beautiful but somewhat egotisticalvillage girl who is wooed by both Baroka and Lakunle. She is also the village belle. She is the titular Jewel; \nSadiku– The chief’s sly senior wife\, head-wife of his harem; \nAilatu– Baroka’s favourite\, who loses her place in his affections due to her jealousy of Sidi. \nSupporting characters:  village girls\, A wrestler\, A surveyor\, schoolboys\, attendants of the Bale\, musicians\, dancers\, singers and villagers

SUMMARY:Shadow of a Gunman by Sean O'Casey - 5 March
DESCRIPTION:“Shadow of a Gunman” by Sean O’Casey is a gripping drama set in 1920s Dublin during the Irish War of Independence. The play follows the story of Donal Davoren\, a poet mistaken for an IRA gunman\, his roommate Seumas Shields and others living in a Dublin tenement as the city is put under curfew culminating in a raid by British auxiliaries. The play explores the themes of identity\, heroism\, and the harsh realities of conflict\, set against the backdrop of a turbulent historical period. \nCast: \n• Donal Davoren (Dan)- a poet living with Seumus in the tenement. Some of the residents suspect he has an affiliation with the IRA. \n• Seumus Shields – a lazy pedlar of about thirty five disillusioned over the nationalist cause he supports who wishes the conflict will end. \n• Tommy Owens – a younger man of twenty five that is enamored with the Republican effort. \n• Adolphus Grigson (Dolphie)- an alcoholic resident of the tenement; a self-proclaimed “Orangeman”\, Grigson’s Protestantism exemplified by his Bible and his picture of King William triumphant at the Battle of the Boyne hanging on the wall doesn’t exempt him from being harassed by the Black and Tans. \n• Mrs Debby Grigson – Adolphus’s wife • Minnie Powell – a woman of twenty three that fawns over Davoran by virtue of his supposed IRA connections; she is sardonically equated to Kathleen Ni Houlihan\, the symbol of Irish nationalism. \n• Mr Mulligan – the landlord of the tenement. \n• Mr Maguire – an IRA volunteer and friend of Seumus. \n• Mrs Julia Henderson – a resident of a neighboring tenement and a champion of Mr Gallogher’s plea. • Mr James Gallogher – a resident of a neighboring tenement seeking the IRA’s help. \n• An Auxiliary – a soldier of the Auxiliary Division

SUMMARY:SHAKUNTALA TUESDAY 26 SEPTEMBER
DESCRIPTION:TUESDAY 26 SEPTEMBER\nSHAKUNTALA\nby Kalidasa \nArranged by Nicolas Wimberger \n“Shakuntala”\, drama in seven acts\, features as the major work of Indian poet and playwright Kalidasa\, who lived and wrote at the Gupta court of Pataliputra during the 4th and 5th century AD. The story is based on a tale from the First Book of the Mahabharata: Shakuntala grows up in a hermitage as the foster-daughter of the chief sage. One day\, she meets Dushyanta\, the young king\, hunting in her forest\, and they fall in love. Besides their different descent\, they marry and see a glimpse of hope to live together happily ever after. – Until fate deals them a blow: when the monarch is summoned back to court\, Shakuntala unintentionally offends another sage\, who curses her so that the king would lose all memory of her. Implored by Shakuntala’s friends to alleviate the curse\, the sage declares that the king’s memory will return if ever Shakuntala can give him back his ring. The play is considered as one of the most precious texts of Sanskrit poetry and stands as an impressive monument of the Ancient World. \nRoles: 6 F\, 6 M \n
